HELLO FRIENDS NEW AND OLD. HAPPY MARCH! 3 things that smack of goodness:
1. [ profile] reel_merlin   signups! Seeing as I've been having a bit of fun with fic writing, I thought I'd try to sign up for something like this.  I read the completed entries over there in the fall and then asked myself "Self, what movie would I want to cross over with Merlin?". And then it hit me and refused to go away...I want a Merlinized version of The Fifth Element. With Arthur!Corbin Dallas and Merlin!Lilu. That's right, Merlin is going to be Milla Jovovich, only with magic instead of martial skills and no orange hair. I might be crazy, BUT I'M EXCITED, FOLKS.

2. March! Which means spring is on its way and kayak season is almost here! (Until I get a drysuit and perfect my roll..then it's on all 4 seasons)

3. Explaining plate tectonics to my coworkers using pizza slices and spatulas for props.

And 3 photos I for the road

That's a Sheppard Fairey piece (of HOPE poster fame) near work

Took these on the way to work today. I didn't do it, honest!

It's still February here. :( I want it to be March though, because a) it's my birthday month and b) Green Zone! (I have a thing for Matt Damon and I loved the Bourne movies, soo. . . (same director for both movies))

I so badly want to participate in [ profile] reel_merlin as well, but I'm afraid to say which one I want to do because I don't want it to be taken.

I've never been kayaking. How did you get into it?

I'm hoping The Fifth Element won't be taken..pretty sure it won't because it isn't even on the prompt list but I like to live dangerously.

Well..technically it is still Feb. here too..but it's Sunday night and March is tomorrow so I rounded up :)

Kayaking is amazing! I mostly go in the ocean but rivers are nice for practice and scenery (well...most rivers anyway, I haven't done whitewhater). I got into sea kayaking through my mom, who got into it through her boyfriend. I tried it for the first time in Fall '08 and took to it quickly. It can be very challenging at times and I am still learning, but so far so good!

I was thinking of signing up too! Probably will. :) For The Way We Were, actually, because I saw the sign-ups announced and went "hmmmmmmm!"

Oh're going classic for your fic! Who's got what role?

If you've got Arthur and Merlin in the main 2 roles I'm already sad b/c I know how it ends, but I'm sure it will be brilliant and angst hurts good.

I have yet to write angst in fandom. That would require me to be serious. Instead I have my characters saving the world in a slightly-cracky future-world. Ah, well..that's me :P

>.> Well, yeah that actually is how I was planning on going about it, actually! Though well done on knowing the classics well enough to know how it ends. It's one of my favorite movies of all time, honestly! I've got a lot of interesting ideas for it, how to blend the story stories, etc! But Arthur strikes me as such a perfect Hubble, and Merlin could fill Katie's outspokeness SO well...

You're right...I can totally see Arthur as Hubble and activist!Merlin as Katie. Don't take my being sad as a bad thing, I actually think it's a really great story and love the fact that you're picking a classic film!

It is a really good movie and I hope you do it!

Glad you agree :) I hope there are other people who know the film!! I plan on at least claiming it, and hopefully getting it written...Lots of ideas!

[ profile] reel_merlin!!! I'm doing it too, and SO excited. \o/ I still don't have any idea what movie to pick, though. :S

Wheee! I'm glad you're in...but there are so many to choose from, and that's just on the prompt list!

I guess you could narrow it down by the genre you feel like writing, or a movie you know really well.

Date: 2010-03-01 12:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Lol, that's the problem! I enjoy writing any genre, and there are so many different types of movies that I've seen and loved that I'll find one and then find another and then another.

I'm probably going to go browse through netflix and see if there's any that really catch my attention. :)

HOLY SHITE, I WAS THINKING OF WRITING A FIFTH ELEMENT FIC FOR REEL MERLIN! But you're welcome to it, if you want -- I only have a sentence and am terrible at finishing, and also wanted to do one based on The Company of Wolves. XD

Oh dear...I haven't officially signed up for it or anything (signups are tomorrow) so it's not really mine...and you've already started! Hmm...well if you want to do it let me know. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the excellence of the idea though :)

I have to admit, I had to Google "The Company of Wolves" but it looks really cool! I also want to see that now.

I adore that film to bits, and it has great potential for a Merlin AU. You go ahead and I will sit on the sidelines telling you how much I can't wait to read it. ;)

My idea will only take one of the scenes from the film, really -- there's this segment where a lord starts a relationship with a lowly maid, and then leaves her pregnant and penniless whilst he gets engaged to a noblewoman. What he neer knew was the poor girl was also a sorceress, and she crashes the wedding feast and curses the entire wedding party into wolves, so that they can serenade her baby at night, forever cursed. Except my idea is that Arthur will be one of the wedding guests, and Merlin has to try and break the curse because he can't bring to murder a heavily pregnant woman who was misused. Except maybe there is a time limit, and he must free Arthur from the curse before the baby is born! And then there are Merlin and wolf!Arthur adventures. Maybe I can work in the other werewolf tales into it as I go on. XD

Well, okay. I'll do my best to do the movie justice..I do love it!

That sounds really interesting! And I like the idea of Merlin and Wolf!Arthur having adventures.

I added you, I hope you don't mind!

Reel_Merlin is always a brilliant challenge! I planned to enter the last one myself but ended up with a monster of a fic that I still haven't finished :-/. I say go for it!

Of course not, new friends are great!

I'm hoping I'll finish, I've never done anything like this before! What movie did you pick?

a Merlinized version of The Fifth Element. With Arthur!Corbin Dallas and Merlin!Lilu.

I have so badly wanted to write a Merlin fic, but it seems like such a daunting task. Also I keep telling myself that I can't write any more fic until I finish my novel. *nods emphatically*

I haven't written much, but I want to do more and having things like deadlines are useful for me.

You're writing a novel!? That's quite the undertaking..what's it about?

Date: 2010-03-01 02:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
It's about this guy who moves to New York to be a musician and meets a girl, and she's got family issues but her family owns a record label and eventually he gets a deal. I mean, it's more complicated than that, but I'm rather verbose, and summarizing would be about as long as the novel. XD I actually have excerpts posted at my LJ if you're interested, it's called "The Perils of Long Hair on a Windy Day".

LOL on #3.

I never saw 5th Element but I always read all the reel_merlin stories so I look forward to it.

See, I was trying to explain the difference between the Haiti earthquake and the recent one in Chile and it really was much easier to demonstrate the strike-slip and subduction zones with props than to just explain it verbally.

Thanks. I'm still working on this whole writing thing so we'll see how I do!

Ahahaha The Fifth Element, the entire movie I spent my time going: "just watch, it's love!" AND THEN IT HAPPENED and I laughed extensively. But I think Arthur and Merlin could fit quite well.

Oh, I know it's a silly movie...part of the reason why I like it is because it's a "save the world" setup that doesn't take itself too seriously. On a fluffy note, in the movie Lilu is supposed to be a very powerful being and is supposedly the protector of the world, but as it turns out even she needs help and protection too. So I feel like it does kind of fit the Merlin-Arthur framework.

We'll see what happens!

It is definitely not a movie to be taken too seriously. Gary Oldman was an excellent villain (as usual). This is true! I like that, I think if you take that as the most important part it could be quite fun!

Hello there!

I keep pndering [ profile] reel_merlin and then think - but what film would I do?

But the Fifth Element Merlin style? I would love to read that one.

I hope I can do the film justice. I've learned that I really like writing with a little snark so that should be just right.

I also signed up to do Equilibrium, kind of on a whim but not really because I have had that x-over in my head for some time now as well. I hesitated because it has character death...but it's such a good story I went for it anyway.

I'm sure you can.

Ooo that sounds an interesting choice too.

Oh. My. God. The Fifth Element is one of my favorite movie and a Merlin fic based on this movie for [profile] reel_merlin would be absolutely awesome! OMG, do iiiiit!
(who will you cast for Ruby? I love him and please, please, tell me you're going to keep him!)

From: [identity profile]
Well, I signed up for it and it's officially in the works so..I'll do my best!

I do love the Ruby character but am going back and forth as to whether or not I should include him. A lot of his comedy is visual (Chris Tucker's movement and facial expressions) and I'm not sure I could bring that out in writing. Well, maybe I could, but I don't know if I'm good enough at writing to make it work.

As to who it would be..well, there aren't many to choose from. It could be Will, and instead of attending a concert they are going to this invitation only political summit. Will is there to do a broadcast commentary for his liberal talk-radio show. So that's one idea.
