Okay, so I watch FlashForward on NBC and while this isn't exactly a crossover, it takes place in that world. I don't think you need to be familiar at all with the show to read this. Oh, and if you don't watch FlashForward, I do recommend it because its an interesting show, which makes me feel better about the fact that the reason I started watching it was Joseph Fiennes.

I don't really think of myself as a writer...certainly not a good one but hey, this was just something my brain came up with on my train ride to class yesterday. IDK why my mind went for cliche' and sappiness, but it did. *shrug*

Title: Not Yet There
Author: Ali

Disclaimer: Have no claims to either FlashForward or Merlin, this randomness is just playin'
Spoilers/Warnings: Not really, although this is unbeta'd and this is coming from someone who previously self-identified as Not A Writer so it may be crap (/end self-deprecation).

Summary: Modern AU/kinda crossover with FlashForward. Merlin works for a temp agency in New York City as an office drone. His life, so far, has been extremely average. His future, however, may not reflect the present.

Merlin yawned as he stretched in his chair. He was tired, and the data-entry work that needed to get done wasn’t exactly stimulating.

“Burning the candle at both ends again?” asked a voice behind him. Merlin swiveled his chair around to address the query, his half-formed response dying in his throat as the world went dark.

Merlin stared, once again, in awe of the window view. This high up he could see completely across Central Park. The day was nearly cloudless, the sun illuminating the bright green new growth of the trees that signified the arrival of spring. Merlin braced his hands on the glass in front of him, leaning toward the window slightly. Being up this high made him a little dizzy, but then, that might have something to do with more than just the altitude.

“Its the same view as yesterday” teased a familiar voice. Merlin felt a surge of affection as warm arms moved to encircle his chest, a body pressing up against his back.

“Mmm...” was Merlin’s response. He smiled as Arthur leaned in, resting his chin over Merlin’s shoulder. They stood there for a moment, sharing the vista. It wasn’t every day the sky was so clear this time of the season. Feeling warm and safe and perfectly content, Merlin didn’t want to move a muscle, although he knew they were already running a bit behind.

“Come on” said Arthur, right on cue “We’ll be late”. He pressed a quick kiss to the side of Merlin’s neck before pulling away. He turned to follow with a sigh, catching a glimpse of freshly-washed blonde hair and-

Merlin was suddenly aware that he was extremely uncomfortable. The surface below him was really quite hard and his arms were going numb from being pressed beneath him. Jerking his eyes open, Merlin realized he had somehow fallen off his chair and was now on the floor, head pressed up against the wall of his cubicle. What the hell had just happened? Had he fallen asleep at work? Hadn’t he just been talking to someone? He moved, going slowly from sitting to standing as he shook out his arms. Looking around the office to see if anyone had noticed his little nap, Merlin realized that everyone else seemed to be doing something similar. In every corner of the office, people were either in the process of getting up off the floor or looking around as if dazed. It was quiet inside the building, but in a sudden rush everything outside seemed to explode; sirens of every kind were going off, people were yelling, screaming even.

As it turned out, everyone, everyone on the face of the earth, had what was being called a “Flash Forward”; a supposed vision into to their own future. Debate was heated as to what it all meant. People were vehemently discussing things like “destiny” and “fate” in an effort to make some sense of it all. Merlin couldn’t help but wonder the meaning behind his own Flash Forward. He had been so...so happy in his vision that part of him couldn’t help but hope it was going to come true. The more practical side of him refused to go down that route. He had been standing in a high-rise along Central Park that probably cost more to rent in two months than Merlin made all year in his job as a temp. He certainly didn’t know anyone who had that kind of money, and didn’t think that anyone who he knew even knew people with that kind of money. Also, the vision had taken place middle of a weekday and Merlin never took off work. He couldn’t really afford to.

To top it all off, while Merlin had a name, he didn’t have a face to lend the person who had made him feel so happy in that moment. All he had was a name and a brief glimpse of blonde hair to go on. It wasn’t anywhere near enough to start searching.

It was ridiculous, Merlin knew, but he couldn’t stop thinking about it. He was of two minds on the issue, thinking about all kinds of high-minded notions like the meaning of destiny and the existence of fate. One minute, he would be the sensible, average guy everyone knew he was and decided searching was stupid, because if it was going to happen anyway shouldn’t it just happen? On the other hand, in his vision he had felt extremely happy, and pretty sure that Arthur had been happy too. Was it wrong to seek out such a thing? Merlin had no good answer.

At some point, one government agency or another decided it would be a good idea to create a database where everyone who wanted to could post their FlashForwards. It ws called Mosaic, and it searchable by anyone, but so far there were no results when Merlin searched with keywords like “Arthur” “Central Park” and “New York”. Could it be that this stranger didn’t like his side of the vision and didn’t want to be found? Or maybe he, Arthur, was like Merlin and just didn’t know what to make of it all, plagued as he was by conflicting thoughts like there is no such thing as fate and but I want what I saw.

Besides, Merlin wasn’t in a position to judge, he hadn’t posted his FlashForward either. One evening, though, a month after the event, he arrived home to his dingy Brooklyn apartment from yet another mind-numbing data entry job and realized that really, he had nothing to lose. Ignoring the voice in his head that told him you’re being foolish Merlin flopped onto his (well, okay his roomate’s) sofa and opened his laptop. Ten minutes later, he closed it again, having posted successfully his FlashForward on Mosaic. Part of him said he was being foolish. Part of him said he should focus on his life as it was now and that daydreaming about some future love was stupid. Part of him remembered how he had felt in that moment; content and loved and happy, and hoped. .

Thanks! I don't know why FlashForward and Merlin characters merged in my head, but they did and this is what happened.

I am thinking of going on, although my problem isn't lack of ideas but too many of them.

Thanks for commenting!

Ok, I was very shy about posting at all, because for all the time I have been in various fandoms I have never actually written, partially because I was so awed at all the stuff I was reading.

ANYWAY, thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!

I love it! Will you write a sequel? I'd love to learn how Arthur and Merlin meet for the first time. ♥

I wasn't planning a sequel, originally, but now I have all sorts of ideas that might just have to get written.

Honestly? I thought that this would get, like, no attention and would go totally unnoticed, but since there is some interest I might just have to keep going b/c of course they meet!

Ohhhhh I really like this! And you have to carry this on it's begging for a sequel. Really well written for a first fic too, I was hooked.
And I have been intending to watch flashforward and this might just have pushed me to start now :P

I read this yesterday and forgot to comment, but found myself thinking about this fic again.

That was a great idea for a fic which never occurred to me to cross-over together. I hope you could write Merlin and Arthur's meeting and the shock they both feel at their first meeting. Or this fic from Arthur's pov would be wonderful too. I admit it wouldn't give me the same closure, but it's a start!

And Joseph Fiennes is yummy. =)

More!!! I demand more! This is practically on its knees begging for more! I cant believe you just left it there! Arthur HAS to see his posting! It's fate! Hmmm i bet the flash forwards were engineered by the Slash Dragon ... that would definitely explain it all! There - all solved!!

PS: Dont worry I was also initially attracted to Flash Forward because of Joseph Fiennes. Its understandable. xx
